Nach zwei erfolgreichen Alben mit Midge Ure und aus der komfortablen Position einer etablierten Band heraus gingen Ultravox mit Beatles-Produzent George Martin ins Studio, um ihren sechsten Longplayer einzuspielen: „Quartet“. 1982 erschienenen, boten die neun Nummern der Platte zwar durchaus vertraut Klingendes wie „Mine For Life“ oder „When The Scream Subsides“, insgesamt steht der Release aber für eine Neuorientierung. Der Opener „Reap The Wild Wind“ oder der Über-Hit „Hymn“ markieren die Hinwendung zu einem glatteren, pompös strahlenden Sound. Der entfaltet seine Wirkung nach wie vor. Das digitalisierte Analog-Master bietet keinen Anlass zum Meckern. Zum 40. „Quartet“-Jubiläum serviert Chrysalis zusätzlich einen Stereo-Mix beziehungsweise einen 5.1 Surround-Sound-Mix von Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree). Zudem enthält diese Ultravox-Box B-Seiten, Raritäten, alternative Versionen (Single-Cuts und extended Versionen) sowie Liveaufnahmen. Herausgekommen ist eine Sammlung, die den Nerd in uns glücklich macht (die Monitor-Mixe), aber auch weniger Bekanntes zutage fördert. Das dezent experimentelle „Hosanna (In Excelsis Deo)“ etwa oder das facettenreiche, elektronische „Overlook“ (beide weitgehend instrumental). Ein kompletter Konzertmitschnitt von 1982 zeigt die Band aus der knackigen Liveperspektive. Eine weitere CD enthält Work-In-Progress-Fassungen (Cassette Rehearsals). Sechs CDs, eine Audio-DVD und ein Booklet erlauben die umfassende Rückschau auf eine Ära – von der Entstehung der Songs bis zur Performance. Meisterwerke wie das fantastisch arrangierte „Visions In Blue“ haben diese Würdigung allemal verdient.

Released in 1982, the record’s nine numbers offered familiar-sounding songs like „Mine For Life“ or „When The Scream Subsides,“ but overall the release stands for a new orientation. The opener „Reap The Wild Wind“ or the über-hit „Hymn“ mark the turn to a smoother, pompously radiant sound. This still unfolds its effect. The digitized analog master offers no reason to complain. For the 40th „Quartet“ anniversary Chrysalis additionally serves a stereo mix respectively a 5.1 surround sound mix by Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree). Furthermore, this Ultravox box contains B-sides, rarities, alternative versions (single cuts and extended versions) as well as live recordings. The result is a collection that makes the nerd in us happy (the Monitor mixes), but also unearths the lesser known. The discreetly experimental „Hosanna (In Excelsis Deo)“, for example, or the multi-faceted, electronic „Overlook“ (both largely instrumental). A complete concert recording from 1982 shows the band from a crisp live perspective. Another CD contains work-in-progress versions (cassette rehearsals). Six CDs, an audio DVD and a booklet allow a comprehensive retrospective of an era – from the creation of the songs to the performance. Masterpieces like the fantastically arranged „Visions In Blue“ certainly deserve this appreciation.
