Es wäre ein im Sinne dieser Rezension höchst interessantes Experiment, würde man dieses Tribut-Album einmal einem erklärten Fan von The Smiths vorspielen, der Spiritual Front nicht kennt. Das lässt sich aber gerade mal nicht realisieren. Darum muss nun das Urteil eines erklärten Fans von Spiritual Front, der The Smiths durchaus kennt, dazu herhalten, um ein formal gewagtes Unternehmen zu würdigen. Als riskant an der immerhin fünfzehn Titel umfassenden Ansammlung von The Smiths-Coverversionen im Gewand des von Simone Salvatori geprägten Suicidal Pop mag wohl vor allem die Provokation des im Raume stehenden Vorwurfs gewertet werden, dass ein ganzes Album der offensiven Huldigung zu widmen, des Guten wohl schlicht zu viel sei. Veto! Denn was soll daran verwerflich sein, wenn stilbildendes Songmaterial von anerkannt hoher Qualität mit omipräsentem Streichereinsatz, viel leidenschaftlichem Schmiss, pietätvollem Schmelz sowie noch viel mehr Liebe zum Detail charakterstark neu eingespielt wird, ohne dabei die unverkennbare Nähe zu den Originalen willentlich einzubüßen? Na also! Und ergo können jetzt angesichts von „The Queen Is Not Dead“ beide Lager getrost frohlocken. Das eine bekommt ein rundum neues (und auf Anhieb vertraut wirkendes) SF-Album, das andere ein Füllhorn durchweg altbekannter Songs, die es „so“ noch nicht gehört hat. Weder Kreativitätskrise noch Majestätsbeleidigung, sondern Mehrwert allenthalben.

It would be a very interesting experiment in the sense of this review if this tribute album would be played to a declared fan of The Smiths who does not know Spiritual Front. But this is not possible at the moment. Therefore, the verdict of a declared fan of Spiritual Front, who does know The Smiths, must be used to appreciate a formally daring enterprise. The risky thing about the fifteen track collection of The Smiths cover versions in the guise of Simone Salvatori’s Suicidal Pop may well be the provocation of the accusation that dedicating an entire album to offensive homage is simply too much of a good thing. Veto! Because what should be reprehensible about it, if style-forming song material of acknowledged high quality with omipresent string use, much passionate verve, reverent melting as well as still much more love to the detail is recorded again character-strongly, without losing thereby the unmistakable proximity to the originals deliberately? There you go! And ergo, in view of „The Queen Is Not Dead“ both camps can now confidently rejoice. The one gets an all-around new (and immediately familiar) SF album, the other a cornucopia of thoroughly well-known songs that it has not heard „like this“ before. Neither creativity crisis nor insult to majesty, but added value everywhere.
